Anatomy of an email

"I wish I had the courage to say no ... when this monstrous political scheme was first ordered. That’s what this Senate is about, sober second thought, not taking dictation from kids in short pants down the hall."

         — Embattled Senator Mike Duffy, to the Senate

In Senator Mike Duffy’s world — and for many backbench Conservative MPs — the "kids in short pants" is a derogatory term for some ministerial staff members who have little or no political experience.

These "unschooled intermediaries," as a National Post columnist once characterized them as being, are often ambitious political players without the skill or practical knowledge that is required of senior staff in the Prime Minister’s Office.

But they are ready, willing and — at times — able to do all the dirty work as prescribed by their superior(s).

But when the Fortress PMO becomes so guarded by these short-panted patriots where ministers, their staff and individual MPs, again according to the Post, often find it almost impossible to get the PMO. The whole situation becomes bitter and counterproductive.

We’re seeing this a bit in the Brandon-Souris byelection, where Conversative forces have taken a shine to the campaign of one-time good-ol’-boy MLA Larry Maguire.

After what I’ll simply term as a controversial nomination process, Maguire is now the Blue Team standard-bearer for this chunk of southwest Manitoba.

So why have some former Brandonites, who now wield indiscriminate power at various ports of entry to the party, become so enchanted with a long-time Tory stronghold of Brandon-Souris?

Well, several sources have told both myself and several Sun editors and reporters whose beats include politics that one of them wants to run for the seat once Maguire — a man of a fulsome 64 years at the present — decides to retire for professional and personal reasons, if he wins the byelection and sits until even just the next general election in 2015. And he wasn’t their first choice of local Tory MLAs.

And after the manipulated (sorry, ‘controversial’) nomination process — combined with a full-court press by the Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau and candidate Rolf Dinsdale the one-time Yellow Dog Tory Blue riding is a scrappy brown mongrel sitting in the pound waiting to be adopted.

With such desperation in the Conservative camp, we’re seeing a custom-tailored version of the Kids in Short Pants right here in Brandon-Souris, with a wide-distribution email sent out to Tories during the middle of a workday to commandeer a simple Brandon Sun online poll.

And for some reason thinking a copy wouldn’t land in my black, dress-panted lap. Enjoy.

trailing in this poll, on the heels of the recent Forum Research poll putting the Liberals
ahead by 5 points.
