Let's Do Something! -- Sept. 2, 2010

You're in luck if you're a fan of older vehicles. The last Cruisin' the Dub of the summer. takes place from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday between Seventh and 13th streets on Rosser Avenue. If that's not enough, the Dari Isle in Minnedosa hosts a '50s night, complete with classic cars and music, on Friday from 5-9 p.m.

Today

* 6 p.m. -- Rural treasures: The farmers' market at the Riverbank Discovery Centre offers end-of-the-summer goodies, from tomatoes, squash and beets to fresh-baked goods. Until 8 p.m.

* 6 p.m. -- Shiny autos: Mingle among other car aficionados during the last Cruisin' the Dub of the summer. From Seventh to 13th streets on Rosser Avenue. Until 9 p.m.

 

Friday, Sept. 3

* 4 p.m. -- Farm fresh: The weekly Shoppers Mall farmers' market will be located at the northeast corner of the parking lot, until 7 p.m. A farmers' market will be held until 6 p.m., beside the Royal Canadian Legion in Minnedosa.

* 5 p.m. -- Back in time: The Dari Isle in Minnedosa will be hosting a '50s night, complete with classic cars and music. Proceeds from this event will be donated to the MRI Goggle campaign. Until 9 p.m.

* 5 p.m. -- Good eats: The Sandy Lake Community in Bloom committee is hosting a perogy supper at the drop-in centre. Open to the public.

* 8 p.m. -- And they're off! The Northern Lights Barrel Racing Futurity and Derby will take place in the Keystone Centre. Continues daily until Sunday at 5 p.m.

 

Saturday, Sept. 4

* 9 a.m. -- A little fresh air: The Westman Wilderness Club has organized a biking/camping weekend on the Central Trail in Riding Mountain National Park. For details, call 476-6434.

* 9 a.m. -- Treasures from the country: The Town Centre parkade will be filled with produce and crafts during the farmers' market. Until noon. In Killarney, the market is open until 11 a.m., and the one in Souris runs from 10 to 11 a.m. Meanwhile at the Riverbank Discovery Centre, the farmers and artisans will have their products displayed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* 10 a.m. -- Choo! Choo! The Brandon Hills Model Railroad Club welcomes the public to the new club room in The Town Centre. Admission is free. Until noon.

* Noon -- Rocking in the sun: The fourth annual FaderFest, a showcase of local talent, will take place in the Faders Music and Recording parking lot. The Young Pixels, Sean Assee, Seeing Colour and others will play. There are prizes for the first 50 attendees. This family event is free, with free drinks and popcorn.

* 2 p.m. -- Sip in time: Take a step back in history and enjoy a cup of tea at the Isabella Museum. A display of Hardanger embroidery will be displayed for the occasion. A silver collection will be taken. Until 5 p.m.

 

Sunday, Sept. 5

* 10 a.m. -- Harvested gems: The farmers' market at the Minnedosa Heritage Village will be open until 2 p.m.

* 11 a.m. -- Deals and more deals: The Dunrea Flea Market will feature more than 100 vendors of antiques and collectibles. The event has moved to the Boissevain fair grounds and arena. Until 4 p.m.

* 2 p.m. -- In the bowl: Victoria Park in Souris, with its naturally formed theatre-like setting, will be the place to be for a performance by Gary McDowell, a rock 'n' roll and gospel singer. Admission is free.

 

At the clubs

* At The Double Decker Tavern, DJ Red and DJ Ryan Koke set the mood tonight. Tuesdays are jamming nights for all interested musicians.

* The patio at Georgie's will be the spot to be for a jam, featuring Nuthin' But Trouble and a few other local musicians. On Friday night.

* At the Great Western Roadhouse, DJ Red gets the Glowing Away Party going on Friday night.

* A DJ will spin the tunes on Friday and Saturday evenings at Houstons.

* The Majestics bring their brand of blues to the Lady of the Lake pub on Friday. Folk duo Soppa takes the stage on Saturday evening.

* On Monday evening, at Parthenon Pizza, Unleash The Archers, Lest We Fail and Devil Vein will perform.

* At The 40, Pop the Trunk rocks out on Friday and Saturday nights.

 

At the galleries and museums

* New perspectives: Wally Dion's "Thunderbird Series" and Scott Waters' "Expressions of Force" are displayed in the main space at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. Admission is free. Above the Brandon Public Library, in The Town Centre. Open today, Friday and Saturday.

* The cream of the crop: The works in the 2010-2011 Arts West Travelling Gallery will be displayed in the Rivers library, until Sept. 11.

* Saluting the past: The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum rewinds the clock to the 1940s. Vintage aircraft, tunics, caps, radio equipment and more await. Admission at the door.

* Great-grandparents' era: The Daly House Museum presents a slice of Victorian life. A tour guide takes visitors back through time in the exhibits of a period house, shop and more. Admission at the door.

* Nature shots: A photography exhibition by Cameron Heming entitled "Second Home: Images From A Clear Lake" will be displayed until tomorrow, at PASiG Designs, at 1009 Princess Ave. Visit the gallery's website pasigdesigns.com/gallery, for hours of operation.

* Bringing history to life: The RCA Museum in Shilo has just opened a Manitoba-focused exhibition space and is currently hosting a travelling tour of 100 years of mortars. The museum is open daily, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Located in building N-118, Patricia Road, at CFB Shilo. Admission at the door. Open during the Labour Day weekend.

* From days gone by: "Images," a new collection of historic photos from Manitoba's Rural and Northern Archives in collaboration with the S.J. McKee Archives is now on display in the Tommy McLeod Curve Gallery, in the John E. Robbins Library on the BU campus. Closes tomorrow. Admission is free.

* Inspired by water life: The Viscount Cultural Centre for the Arts exhibits works by watercolourist Gerry Oliver entitled "A Shepherd's Diary: The First Half," until Sept. 30.

* Art in the park: The Wasagaming Community Art Centre has two new shows displayed -- one by Peruvian born Ivan Celestino and the other by The Group of 8, seven women artists with a virtual eighth spot. Admission is free.

 

Upcoming

* On Sept. 9 and 10, a barbecue will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 5600 Richmond Ave. E. location of Traction Brandon. During its trade show, there will be with a special display of "The Gambler," a show truck.

* The German Society is hosting an Oktoberfest evening on Sept. 11, at the Riverview Curling Club. For tickets, call 729-7597 (Manfred), 761-6020 (Darrell) or 724-0385 (Wolfgang).

* The Brandon University School of Music's Pro Series returns with a season of concerts, the first of which will feature the in-house jazz quartet -- pianist Michael Cain, saxophonist Greg Gatien, bassist Jesse Dietschi and drummer Eric Platz -- in an all-Gershwin program. On Sept. 14, in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall.

* The Harvest Moon Festival will take place from Sept. 17 to 19, in Clearwater.

* Hedley brings its music to Westman Place, in the Keystone Centre on Sept. 19, with guests These Kids Wear Crowns and San Sebastian.

* Beatlemania, the touring show that pays homage to Paul, John, George and Ringo, stops in Brandon on Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.

* In the wake of the successful first presentation of The Band's "The Last Waltz," in Onanole, a followup presentation is slated for Sept. 17. Tickets must be purchased in advance at Poor Michael's Bookshop or by calling 848-0336.

* Pet Projects Theatre presents a repeat presentation of "Art" by Yasmina Reza, featuring Blair Bolduc, Jim Forsythe and Gordon Portman, from Sept. 17 to 19, in the Evans Theatre.

* Re-Generation Boutique, a one-day women's sharing experience, will take place on Sept. 18. An exchange of good quality clothes, the distribution of new makeup, the opportunity to have a manicure and refreshments, all

will be available at practical prices. Call 726-0008 for details.

* The Brandon Chamber Players' season kicks off with a tribute to Bach, featuring his "Coffee Cantata" and the Brandenburg Concerto No. 6. This special concert will be held at the Lady of the Lake café, with a dinner and concert package at 5:30 p.m. or simply attend the concert at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the BU School of Music office.

* Mark your calendar! The local Latin community has organized a food, music and dance festival for Cultural Days, a national initiative held across Canada, to be held on Sept. 24 and 25. Visual artists will also contribute to this special weekend with three hands-on projects -- one using embroidery, one with graffiti and another with comic book art -- as well as three artist studio open houses. Words Alive Book Festival presents Pencils Alive, a book club and writing group for children between the ages of eight and 12 to be launched at 11 a.m. on Sept. 25. As well, Fast Fiction, the 24-hour short story writing contest, will begin at 5 p.m. on Sept. 25. Other activities will be posted as they are announced.

* Yuk Yuk's touring comedians will appear on Sept. 24 and 25, at Clancy's Eatery and Drinkery. Call to reserve tickets.

* The Rogue Theatre Company will launch its inaugural season with a production of "The Last 5 Years," on Sept. 24 and 25, in Brandon University's Lorne Watson Recital Hall.

* Paquin Entertainment presents a live show for children called "Max and Ruby: Bunny Party," on Sept. 25, at noon, at the WMCA.

* To celebrate National Family Week, a free family party, with Al Simmons in concert, will take place in Princess Park on Oct. 3.

* Frank Horvat, on his Green Keys Tour in support of the World Wildlife Fund, stops at Knox United Church on Oct. 3 for a performance of original piano music and an eco-showcase.

* Saskatoon soprano Chelsea Mahan, with collaborative pianist Kathleen Lohrenz Gable, will give a recital on Oct. 16 in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall.
