Dancing to glory

Talk about dancing for joy.

A trio of young dancers from Manitoba’s Sagkeeng First Nation have made their province proud by winning the television competition show “Canada’s Got Talent.”

Vince O’Laney 17, his brother Brandon, 18, and 16-year-old Dallas Courchene returned home to a hero’s welcome this week, after taking the champion title for performing a fusion of traditional clogging and tap-dancing.

As the Winnipeg Free Press reported, the group, called Sagkeeng’s Finest, eliminated 11 other finalists on Monday evening to win the top prize of $100,000, a trip to Tobago, a sports car, a chance to perform in Las Vegas and an appearance at a televised New Year’s Eve party.

O’Laney told the CBC that the group’s dance moves, based on traditional jigging, are the result of lots of hard practice, and credited a Sagkeeng drama and arts program for sparking their interest.

“We signed up for jigging and we’ve been excelling in it ever since,” O’Laney said. “I just love to dance.”

And it shows.

Congratulations guys. It was great to see you prove that traditional aboriginal culture still has a winning place in the modern day.
