So after 20 years of holding its Municipal Officials Seminar in Brandon, the Association of Manitoba Municipalities has decided to hold the 2015 meeting in Winnipeg.
And that’s just fine.
As the Sun reported on Saturday, the annual event will begin to rotate between Winnipeg and Brandon, after a resolution that was put forward at the convention last fall to move the MOS to Winnipeg and change its date from April to February, passed with strong delegate support.
The MOS draws nearly 650 elected officials and municipal office staff to take part in professional development workshops and the annual trade show.
Certainly it would have been nice to keep those dollars in Brandon every year, but it would be disingenuous to make such a demand.
Back in 2010, when the AMM executive went against the wishes of their own membership and dropped Brandon as a host site for the organization’s annual general meeting, this city had just cause to feel slighted. Thankfully, after our city officials and other Westman municipalities raised a ruckus, that change did not occur.
To give as many municipalities as possible an equal chance of attending the annual event only makes sense, so rotating between Brandon and Winnipeg was the best option for the AGM.
And so it is with the yearly seminar. Rotating the location and changing the date appears to be the fairest compromise for a majority of attendees.
Not to recognize that would just make us look greedy.
