Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION

It always pays to subscribe

It’s always interesting to delve back into historic newspapers.

We did it this week to take a look at possibly the Brandon Sun’s most successful subscription drive ever.

Exactly 100 years ago, we wrapped up a multi-month contest in which hundreds of people competed to sell subscriptions to the Sun.

First prize? A house. Second prize? A car. In total, we gave away $6,000 in prizes, the equivalent of more than $120,000 today (the house alone is worth more than that now).

It was fun to find out that the house is still standing a century later. It was even more fun to trace its ownership over the past 10 decades and to talk to the people who live there now.

In honour of that long-ago contest, we’re pleased to offer the current owners a complimentary subscription to the Brandon Sun.

Of course, even if you happen to live in a house that wasn’t won from us a hundred years ago, a Sun subscription can still be yours with a simple phone call to our circulation department.

There’s even still time to put it under the tree.
