'A principled and effective representative'

It is with deep regret that I mark the passing of Errol Black.

Mr. Black was a longtime Brandon city councillor, New Democrat activist and past federal candidate. His generous and selfless nature drew people to him, and his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get the job done was an inspiration.

While on city council, he showed great dedication to giving a voice to the voiceless. His strong commitment to social justice issues were at the root of his support for Canada’s public health-care system and increases to the minimum wage, as well as his work to extend labour rights to farm workers. He will be remembered for being a principled and effective representative for his constituents.

At Brandon University, Mr. Black published frequently and became a foremost expert in labour economics. Of course his book on trade unions is a standard for university courses and his great contributions to the labour movement will be long remembered.

On behalf of all New Democrats, I extend sincere condolences to Mr. Black’s family and friends. He will be missed.

THOMAS MULCAIR

Leader of the Official Opposition

New Democratic Party of Canada
