If they’d quit wasting money on overblown museums and hockey teams, I might get on board with a provincial sales tax hike.
If they used every penny from that hike for what they say they will and didn’t fritter it away on other hare-brained schemes, I might knuckle under.
If they’d explain why the recent gas tax hike for infrastructure now isn’t going to be enough, I might approve of this plan.
If they can explain where the road and bridge building jobs they say this hike will generate will go once the bridges are built and the roads are built, you’ll get my approval.
But in the end we’ll just have the taxes, won’t we and little net gain to show for all our sacrifices?
This is a time when property taxes in Brandon have skyrocketed, jobs are going under all over town and pretty much everything’s costing more.
All the while those still working and those not on strike because some business that earns half a billion dollars a year want to drastically cut their pension plans, get no wage increases.
And the media and business groups kvetch about minimum wage hikes.
So I have to say the level of rage ideas like this create — the possibility that the province will increase the provincial sales tax by a percentage point and dedicate the proceeds to renew or replace municipal infrastructure — is going to just keep climbing and climbing.
This rapacity at all levels makes me fear for what my children will be facing a few short years down the (newly one-time paved) road!
