Committee still making plans for Brandon Veterans' Memorial

Please permit me the opportunity to update the citizens of Brandon of the progress on the Veterans’ Memorial to be constructed on the corner of Victoria Avenue and 11th Street.

As has been reported in the media, a good portion of the funds have been raised and the police station has been completed. The committee is now waiting on the city, specifically the engineering department, to modify the parking lot, develop the green space and tender the work for the installation of the monument.

We have been assured that the tender will be let this fall and that the work will be completed in time for the dedication ceremony to be held in June 2013. In the meantime, the Veterans’ Memorial Committee is continuing to raise funds, working on the donor board and planning the dedication ceremony.

The members of the committee would sincerely like to thank the many organizations and individuals who have donated and to remind people that if they wish to remember a veteran, that they can still do so. All donations of $100 can have the name of veteran being remembered inscribed on the donation board.

Donations can be dropped off at the Brandon City Hall treasury department.

By this time next year, Brandon will have a memorial to recognize the sacrifices made by the thousands of veterans from our community.

DON BERRY, Chair

Veterans’ Memorial Committee
