Community needs the Sportsplex pool

Regarding the renewed push to close the Sportsplex pool (Brandon Sun, Jan. 4):

Yes, it is a money-loser. But I wonder how many who would like to see it go, have ever been there and observed who is using it?

I swim three times a week. I see parents with infants and toddlers as they are taught to be at home in the water. I see classes from many different school divisions, kids rejoicing in one of the few chances they ever have to swim and play in a big pool. I see accountants and lawyers and surgeons swimming for fitness and tension-relief at noon.

I see many other people doing the same and I see numerous people like myself, older and/or with physical problems that make it difficult or impossible for them to get exercise or stay fit in any other way (particularly in the winter).

I am sure that there are dozens of people who swim for exercise or for training for competition, at other times.

The YMCA has a lovely pool (even if it should have been made bigger). But that pool alone just can not accommodate all the swimmers in the Brandon area, let alone offer time for people or students from outside Brandon.

The Sportsplex pool needs some very costly upgrades. As a retiree, I would not object to a small increase in fees or in taxes, if that is what it takes to keep the Sportsplex pool going.

It is a badly needed facility for Brandon and for Westman.
