I am the past-president of the Conservative party’s board of directors here in Brandon-Souris. Over the weekend I decided to write this letter for all Conservative party members, supporters and those of you reading it that supported the Conservative party in the past. I want to begin by saying that I understand how some of you might feel frustrated about editorials and columns in the paper lately about our local Conservative nomination process.
During the time I was president of the board of directors of the Conservative party in Brandon-Souris, I worked closely with the three men who were on the local Conservative candidate nomination committee over the past month.
I have respect for D’Arcy Barker, Greg Dinsdale and Scott Hayward. They are respected by fellow Conservatives from across Brandon-Souris for their many years of committed service to the Conservative party. It is because of the respect other Conservative party members have for these three men that each of them was even approved to serve on the local nomination committee, which was tasked with managing the nomination process. I have no doubt at all that these three managed the nomination process with integrity.
I believe that if anything scandalous took place, at least one of them would have stood up in opposition. I’m not alone believing this either. In his guest column this past Saturday, Kerry Auriat, a Brandon business executive and one-time supporter of Chris Kennedy, said he now believes that Larry Maguire was acclaimed because nomination campaign rules were not followed by other candidates, and not because of dirty tricks. If people who volunteered on the Kennedy campaign have now come to this conclusion, I hope that with time everyone else will, too.
Finally, I just want to add that because of my involvement with the Conservative party, I have known Larry Maguire for some time. He has been an outstanding MLA for Arthur-Virden. I lived near Larry’s constituency for many years and have many friends in the Virden area. Larry’s involvement with his community is well known and he is respected.
Outside of politics I know that Larry has been a leader in business and many volunteer programs such as charities, foundations and his local church. I know that Larry will serve Brandon-Souris very well as our MP. I think that we will be lucky to have him representing us in Ottawa and that is why I’m voting for Larry Maguire.
