Discussion can only help build cohesiveness

A university should strive to increase social cohesiveness within its student body and society as a whole.

Learning the art of respectful discourse is part of the learning process and allows students to increase their emotional intelligence and the understanding of others. It is most unfortunate that some university leaders across Canada fail to understand this.

They are not only failing their university community, they are failing what the role of a university should be in the 21st century.

In Brandon University’s administration, the student and faculty associations need to work on having debates on issues that are going on in our campus, city, province and world. A university must be about encouraging students to be engaged on the issues of the day.

But it must not just be about debate — our debating must lead to social action to assist the poor the sick and elderly. But particularly those that have a problems of being mistreated in the in our society.

I say to all students, if you feel strongly about a cause, then write about it. When you are just learning the rules of the game of adulthood, now is the time to pour out your passion. Get involved in student government. To ensure a future successful career, you are not wasting your time by working on social justice projects in the community while you work for your undergrad degree.

You must use all your energy to develop at BU to be the best you can be. Not to do so would be a tragic waste of your talents. Thus the choice of the level of success you wish to have is yours and yours alone. Yes, it is your choice to work with passion and empathy to obtain your dreams while you study here at BU. Make good use of your time.

To faculty and administration, I say stop bickering and let’s start engaging in positive dialogue on our workplace matters and organizing the channels for fruitful discuss on all workplace issues as many universities have done. To create the needed organizational cohesiveness for us to have a successful year ahead, this will take leadership between the parties.

But most importantly, leadership is needed to create the processes of communications to facilitate creative debate on the intellectual issues of the day — for the good of all in our university community.
