I was dismayed by Kerry Auriat’s column (March 8, “Public Safety Trumps Individual Rights In Li Case”) where he compares Vince Li to killers Paul Bernardo and Clifford Olson.
Bernardo and Olson were psychopaths and clearly knew — and enjoyed — the stalking, torture and murder of their victims. As horrendous and tragic as the
murder of Tim McLean was, Li was found to be not criminally responsible because of a severe untreated mental illness. He had no capacity to understand his actions. He had a disease that took away his control.
Clearly, Mr Auriat has no knowledge of mental illness.
I can’t say it better than your sister paper’s columnist Dan Lett wrote. It’s an intelligent and more humane look at the issue of Li being allowed limited freedoms after six years of psychiatric treatment.
