Don't play to the stereotype

After watching clips and reading articles about World Pride 2014 in Toronto, I have a couple concerns I’d like to share with the people.

First I will state I am an ally of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) rights movement and I have a concern about conduct at Pride events that re-enforce homophobes stereotypes. No wonder homophobes think gays/GLBTQ and allies are a bunch of perverts!

I saw a video of the World Pride 2014 event where a guy was almost naked wearing a huge almost thigh-sized dildo, at a public event with little kids and families, and he gets away with it, which is just mind-blowing.

It is disgusting and frustrating to see Pride rallies, protests and events, where supposedly mature, responsible adult gay guys (and some others) show up in the crowd or on floats, etc., half-naked, not even just that, but wearing nothing but tight, tiny underwear, or even giant dildos, at family/public events, right in front of children/kids. And all those allies and other GLBTQ*ers who condone and support this.

It is no wonder when homophobes stereotype gays as a bunch of sexually promiscuous perverts! Do you think that this is acceptable when you do this? That it helps the GLBTQ community and rights movement? It is hurting the cause! It is counter-productive.

I mean, use your heads people! You don’t prance around in public, in front of children in nothing but skimpy, tight underwear, or wearing giant dildos and acting like you’re on the set of a porn movie. What is wrong with you? Really, use your brains, or are you completely dense? Or are the homophobes right in their stereotypes? GLBTQ and allies and event organizers should not be allowing this to be done at these events. Nor should the local governments and police, etc. Why? Because they wouldn’t allow this in general from anyone for any reason. Why should gay men be given the special privilege to act like perverted whores in public in front of kids when no one else can in any other context.

You don’t want to be stereotyped as sexually promiscuous perverts or as harmful to kids? Well ... then don’t act like that stereotype.

If you do (or you endorse and condone this behaviour) you have no right to complain when you get stereotyped and judged as such. Grow up and use your heads. These events aren’t porn movies, they aren’t adult clubs — they are public family events. The GLBTQ community shouldn’t be allowing this at these events, and should be critical of those that do, and so should allies, government, media, and police.

This is unacceptable behaviour for public, family events, and counter-productive to the cause and just reinforces negative stereotypes of the homophobes. Either this, or the events should be held indoors and forbid anyone under 18 from entering.

Thanks for reading and considering my concerns, I hope you will take this seriously and also hope I will not be misunderstood. I reiterate, I am fully an ally of the movement and of anyone who is GLBTQ.
