The recently announced federal government cuts to the budget of Parks Canada has resulted in the announcement that Riding Mountain’s ever popular cross-country ski trails will no longer be maintained.
An area member of Parliament has proposed that users of the park’s ski trails may want to consider volunteering their labour and equipment to maintain the parks ski trails system.
The proposal to have volunteers maintain the park’s ski trail system will have a particular appeal to those individual members of the electorate prone to championing the political agenda of their MP, lower taxes, less government while reducing the size of the federal civil service.
Those committed to voluntarily maintaining the park’s ski trail system into the future will undoubtedly be rewarded by a warm and fuzzy feeling commonly associated with the knowledge that by volunteering their labour they are replacing a park employee’s livelihood thereby freeing up the government of Canada’s capacity to reduce taxes.
Those few individuals who do not share the political agenda of their current MP and government of Stephen Harper may in the spirit of charity want to consider volunteering their valuable services to identify those ski trails within the park which are closed due to lack of volunteers by installing signs — “Trail closed due to Government of Canada cutbacks to the budge of Parks Canada. Travel at your own risk. Federal government tax cuts have been applied to this ski trail. For further information, contact your local MP.”
