My family is very proud to call Brandon and western Manitoba home. I was born and raised here, and have dedicated my adult life toward working together with others to build our community.
I have done this as a private citizen, as a community volunteer, as a city councillor, as an elected representative with the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, and as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. Working for Brandon and the betterment of our community is a privilege and Brandon is always my top priority.
Consistent with this principle, I wish to put to rest all media speculation and state that I am not seeking the office of mayor in the upcoming municipal election.
There are many factors bearing on this decision, not the least of which is the fact that I respect the people of Brandon East and the mandate they have given me as their representative in the Manitoba legislature. Abandoning constituents who have placed their confidence and trust in me is not responsible, honourable, nor in the best interests of our community.
I also very much respect those who selflessly put their names forth to represent our community and am privileged to call both Shari Decter Hirst and Rick Chrest friends. I have personally known both for decades and respect their community spirit, their love of Brandon, and the qualities they bring to bear on the municipal challenges facing our community.
It is my hope and expectation that we will have a robust municipal election campaign this year, with an honest competition of positive ideas for how to make Brandon an even better community for all of us to live in. As a citizen, I hope for and will continue to encourage broad participation in this municipal election.
