The Veterans’ Memorial Committee was tasked with coming up with a design, suggesting a location and raising the funds to construct a memorial for the veterans from Brandon and district. The memorial recognizes the contribution and sacrifice of all our veterans, past, present and future.
The committee felt that the general public should have an opportunity to participate in funding of this project. To accomplish this aim, the public was given the opportunity to contribute $100 to have the name of a veteran remembered. The veteran’s name would be recognized on a plaque to be displayed at city hall. We did not say that the veteran had to come from Brandon, and the cut-off date for donations is the end of 2013.
Let me say, that at no time in any of our publicity did we say that the name would appear on the monument itself. There are good reasons for this. If names were to be placed on the memorial, then it stands to reason that we should have the names of all the veterans from Brandon and district. This would be impossible because records do not exist.
I would ask people to be patient. We have been working on this project for more than five years and we hope that we will finish our work sometime next year. In the meantime, a committee is looking at the best way to display the names of the veterans whose families have contributed to this project.
