As the member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette, I appreciate the efforts constituents have made to let me know their concerns regarding the changes to winter programming at Riding Mountain National Park. I share many of these concerns.
I have discussed the issue with key Parks Canada personnel and I have been in regular contact with the minister’s office to let them know how important the ski trails and the skating rink are to the local communities and tourism business.
I have let them all know that we need to find a way to keep the trails and rink operational.
I will convene a meeting with local residents, stakeholders and the park management to discuss the changes and how we can ensure that the ski trails grooming can be maintained and the skating rink remain open.
This may mean that the park’s staff and volunteers will need to work together to maintain the trails. I encourage those constituents interested in taking part to contact my office.
I want to work with all interested parties and Parks Canada to ensure that the ski trails will be maintained and I look forward to working with constituents and the park to make this happen.
