This letter is in response to James O’Connor’s Editor’s Notebook column of Feb. 16 in which he compared the local Strand Theatre project to the successful Lyric theatre project in Swift Current, Sask.
Some further information should be provided to allow for an objective comparison.
The Lyric project was undertaken by a group of volunteers in 2005. By their own hard work — and without federal funding — they had the venue operational in 2006. By their continued hard work and local fundraising, they continued to operate and improve the theatre.
With that successful track record, combined with broad community support, they were able to present a strong business case for the further development and restoration of the facility. To that end they were successful in obtaining infrastructure spending.
The efforts of the Strand group in Brandon have been reported many times in this newspaper.
Instead of reporting the news fully, accurately and fairly, Mr. O’Connor often presents one-half of the story to sway public opinion.
I will continue to listen to the people of Brandon-Souris and not the Brandon Sun when it comes to where your tax dollars are spent.
