Office closure will hurt veterans

Re: Veterans Affairs Office in Brandon Could Close: Report (Brandon Sun, Feb. 22).

When the need was there for Canada, our servicemen and women responded to the call of government to fulfil a duty. There were many sacrifices, bloodshed, wounded and grief to overcome. Still they prevailed. They served with honour and distinction and Canada was proud of their achievements.

Now, many veterans, suffering in their twilight years, are in need of assistance.

Our government however, in their cost-cutting efforts, are reducing Veterans Affairs offices across Canada. This will make it more difficult for aged veterans and those with complex needs to claim their benefits without the expertise and assistance of knowledgeable personnel to help and guide them.

Once our veterans and service personnel were lauded with high praises of eternal gratitude and respect as heroes. However budget constraints have priority now, and veterans, in their time of need, have become a liability in the financial column of government restraint.

It is indeed disappointing and shameful that the Government of Canada would use our veterans’ needs as a cost-cutting measure to help balance its books.
