Once you destroy morals, what's left?

Western Citizens United held a rally to protest Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s perceived lack of respect for Parliament and Canada’s democratic institutions.

Re: “What’s The Point Of Protesting?” (Our View, Brandon Sun, June 26) and “Harper Government Obsessed With Silencing Debate And Stifling Dissent, (June 27)

A very good read and in my ‘view’ the very last line — “And people wonder why Canadians are so blasé about politics and politicians these day” — sums it all up so perfectly.

To continue, however, I believe that it is also because a state of secularism exists. Quite basically, secularism refers to the belief that religion has no place in the day-to-day activities of governing bodies. For example, the view that public education and other matters should be conducted without the introduction /or interference of a religious element.

Therefore, for the most part, in today’s governance, thinking and decisions are accomplished, using only the pocketbook guide (money).

The guides of conscience, compassion and heart are of no use in the political considerations and politics of today. And prayer for guidance would not be politically correct. Heavens forbid.

So, what are the consequences? Firstly, you undermine and eventually destroy morals. What follows then is no morals, which means no values.

No values means no rules; no rules means individual choice, which brings conflict and conflict creates social and personal suffering.

I believe that many Canadians today are extremely disturbed that our government flaunts and ignores the very principles that the foundations of our democracy are based on. People realize that democracy is precious and worth fighting for.

Changes are on the horizon. The government has to change its ways … or the people will change for a different style of government!

Religion does not equate to morals.
