Put elbows up to fend off cyclists, skateboarders

I have an issue that I would like to bring to the attention of fellow Brandonites.

When the seasons are warm, people bring out their bicycles and skateboards. What I’d like to point out is some of these bikers and skaters do not respect pedestrians on the sidewalk.

People I’m close to, and I personally, have been injured several times by people on wheels, while walking on the sidewalk, due to negligence.

I’d like to remind owners of bikes and skateboards; you do not have the right-of-way when on a pedestrian sidewalk. It’s your responsibility to be safe by giving people more than enough space when you pass. Better yet, get off your wheels and walk until you have room again.

I came up with a method so I’m not injured on the sidewalk anymore. When I hear the “zip” of wheels behind me, I stick out my elbows as far from my body to protect myself and warn whatever is oncoming to move out of my way. I recommend this method as a way of protecting yourself and to warn people on wheels to not drive by you too close.

Thank you for your time.
