Another school year is finished and another group of graduates have successfully finished their high school careers, a very significant accomplishment for our students and their teachers.
Good schools are essential to a community’s prosperity. Whenever a large company considers expanding into a community one of the first things it will evaluate is the quality of the schools in the community.
A company knows that to be successful in recruiting top notch staff the community must offer good schools for the children of its staff. When a family considers relocating one of the first things they’ll evaluate will be the schools in the areas they are considering.
Over the past several years the Brandon’s school system has made remarkable progress and successfully met a number of challenges. The Brandon school system offers more options to the community’s children then have ever been offered before.
There have been a number of significant innovations that have been implemented. All of these have required tremendous work by our teachers, administrators and school board. Change, even good change, is always stressful. Everyone who works in our school system is deserving of our thanks and congratulations.
The new Off Campus program has had tremendous success as an alternative for students who don’t thrive in a conventional class room situation. There are many reasons why some students don’t thrive in a conventional classroom situation and many of those reasons are not the fault of the student.
The Off Campus program has had great success in helping students complete their high school education; these are students that other wise would have dropped out and suffered from lack of opportunities for the rest of their lives.
The new Baccalaureate program has also been a tremendous success. Most young families considering moving to Brandon wouldn’t come if there wasn’t a chance for their children to get ahead.
Certainly the children already living in Brandon deserve a chance to get ahead. The Baccalaureate program gives students the opportunity to take advance placement courses that will give them a head start when they begin their post secondary education. This is essential if Brandon is to have success with its youth returning as professionals.
With the increase of immigrants that have enriched life in Brandon and who are significantly responsible for Brandon’s prosperity there has been a huge need to teach English as a second language. This new challenge has required organization, resources, and work. To its credit, the Brandon school system has been successful with this.
Most school systems would deservedly be proud to have successfully implemented any one of these innovations; Brandon’s school system through the work of everyone involved has achieved an outstanding record of accomplishment that benefits our community. Thank you.
