Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION
I read with interest the letter to the editor by Colin Atkins last Wednesday and the responses in the Saturday Brandon Sun.
It seems to me that the differences between those who bring intelligent design and those who bring science to the table as opposing views, are not actually that large.
While I am not a scientist, I do value and respect the work they do as they strive to explain the very complex workings of life on this planet. As a Christian, I believe that God created this amazing Earth and all that is in it. How He did that remains a mystery, and even science has yet to prove how life began here.
Even if the most recent scientific theories of life arising from the primordial soup are accurate, they do not exclude the work of an intelligent designer who would have provided the impetus for the formation of those first living cells.
To provide the creatures He created with the ability to evolve can be seen as a wise and thoughtful move by the Creator, who would know that they would need to be able to adapt to a changing environment.
While many of the events portrayed in the Bible have been proven to be historically accurate, I believe that the creation stories (yes, there are two of them) were written long after the fact and were not meant to be taken literally, but to demonstrate the infinite outpouring of God’s love revealed in creation.
I must admit that I find it very difficult to believe that the incredible diversity of flora and fauna on this Earth developed randomly.
For instance, even after years of dedicated research, we still do not fully understand how the human body works. The more we learn, the more questions arise.
I do lean toward the belief that the Creator had a big hand in the development of His creatures and the amazing gifts they received.
Anyone who has admired the wonder of a sunset or has seen the shimmering ruby throat of a hummingbird, for instance, would agree that the gift of colour in our world is one that we cherish.
So while scientists, many of whom are also Christian, continue to learn more about the complexities of our world, I believe that their discoveries just confirm the power, the incredible imagination and the wisdom of our Creator.
As Romans 1:20 tells us, “God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
