Story on gay couple an inspiration

I just wanted to take a moment to write a letter to the editor to commend the Brandon Sun for publishing such an inspiring story about the recent wedding of Karli Jones and Ashley Graham in Killarney.

It is truly inspiring to read about such a well-deserving couple celebrating such a momentous day in front of their friends and family and with the support of their community.

Although my brother, then myself and then my parents have all relocated to the West Coast, Killarney and the Westman region will always be my home. Being gay myself, I know how difficult it can be for LGBT youth in rural Manitoba to find peace, happiness and a path forward. I took the leap to move out of the region to the cosmopolitan oasis of Vancouver. Still, I find it incredibly encouraging to hear and read stories like that of Karli and Ashley’s from back home.

They may not realize it, but they have made a difference by sharing their story and living their lives openly and proudly. Being gay, closeted and in a small town can be tough enough. Yet it is folks like these two wonderful and courageous women who break down barriers and send a message to that kid who might be lost or without hope that they matter and things do truly get better.

Congratulations to both Karli and Ashley and may you enjoy a lifetime of happiness together.
