Trustees must ask the right questions

Brandon School Division trustees need to give their heads a shake!

I find it quite remarkable that the Brandon School Division is demanding a new school and expecting to have a location secured, budgeted, designed, built, staffed and opened in just three years by 2015.

That won’t happen and they need to give their heads a shake.

BSD just sold Fleming School to Sioux Valley Dakota Nation in 2010, which took them five years to close and sell. And this is the third school they’ve closed since 1992. Now, BSD is consulting about what to do with recent enrolment increases, they are floating the option of renting space in Fleming School from Sioux Valley. Seriously?

We need our trustees to ask some important questions: Can we make better use of or expand existing schools? Can we make use of surplus space at Brandon University or Assiniboine Community College? Will our enrolment continue to grow at the same rate given the Harper government’s recent changes to immigration policy? Brandon’s growth is a good thing for our community, but it demands that our school board do more than simply demand a new school be built at taxpayers’ expense two years after they closed and sold a school.

They need to ask the right questions and come up with a solid plan for the future, something they have not done in the past.
