I agree completely with city manager Scott Hildebrand that he and Mayor Shari Decter Hirst should have been on the inaugural WestJet flight. It is all part of forming a relationship with the company that will be beneficial for years to come. It was truly a business trip.
There is also no question that Mayor Shari used it as a photo op because she is a photo op type of mayor. I personally think she is losing some credibility because of the way she has the answers to too many things but, maybe I am just jealous because I do not have near as many answers myself without seeking advice from others.
To quote Drew Caldwell (and I can’t believe I am doing this) “the market conditions were finally right for this expansion into the Westman market.” That is part of a sentence in his letter to the editor on Sept 6. The first part of the sentence was political rhetoric.
I am sure that the city did a good job selling the virtues of the city and the area, but if the business case did not work, WestJet would not be here today. If the numbers do not prove to meet their projections they might not be here too long. However, with the growth in the southwest (due to the oil boom boost to the economy and not any politicians) I personally believe they will be here for the long term.
Now that we have the air service it is important to use it.
