Whose morality do you legislate?

In his letter to the editor (Brandon Sun, April 30), Wayne Wilson made some excellent points about the casino issue. Although I appreciate what he said, there was one thing I questioned.

Mr. Wilson wrote, “Let’s talk about the ‘residents who hold ardent religious views’ and the statements made about the moral and social costs of a casino. I will leave out the moral clause because ... I understand you cannot legislate morality.”

Mr. Wilson did not need to leave out the moral clause because all laws legislate morality. Anyone who says, “there oughta be a law that ...” is trying to legislate morality. They are declaring one behaviour to be right and another to be wrong.

The only question is, whose morality should be legislated?
