Liberals' best bet?

The big story out of the Calgary Stampede this weekend was about a skinny French guy from Quebec who pressed the flesh and smiled for the cameras.

Liberal MP Justin Trudeau looked very much like a man intent on seeking the leadership of the federal Liberal party, reported The Canadian Press, as he donned a cowboy hat, boots and jeans and waded through the crowd at a Calgary Stampede pancake breakfast Saturday.

While clearly falling short of the nationwide Trudeaumania his father Pierre enjoyed decades ago, Trudeau worked his way down the long line of pancake enthusiasts at a Liberal breakfast, speaking to each person and posing for photos.

And the eldest son of the former prime minister acknowledged that running for the leadership is very much on his mind.

Why wouldn’t it be? A poll by The Canadian Press and Harris-Decima released last month suggests 33 per cent of Canadians would be likely or certain to vote Liberal with Trudeau at the helm.

That would be a major step up from the dismal 19 per cent the party scored in last year’s federal election, an all-time low.

While we aren’t certain if his personal lineage alone qualifies him to be a party leader, his pedigree and personal charm is doing more for the Grits than any of their other recent leaders.
