While we congratulate John LoRegio on his win in the Meadows byelection this week, we’re concerned with the very low turnout.
It’s tough enough to convince people to get out and vote, tougher still when it’s “just” a byelection and there’s no vote for mayor.
We were hoping that the perception of a close race between LoRegio and Ramona Coey might help increase voter participation. But fewer than one in five eligible voters bothered.
Another way to look at LoRegio’s 51 per cent victory would be that some 90 per cent of eligible voters in the ward didn’t vote for him.
We mean to take nothing away from his win. We wish him all the best as a city councillor — an often thankless, arguably underpaid position.
We just hope that in the next regular election, the ballot boxes are a little more full.
