While we’re on the topic of bad provincial decisions, we find ourselves in agreement with Progressive Conservative Opposition Leader Brian Pallister, who called for a full review of Manitoba Hydro megaprojects in a letter to the Sun yesterday.
As Pallister wrote, the NDP is rather foolishly directing Manitoba Hydro to plow ahead with a $21-billion megaproject to build two new hydro dams and a hydro transmission line without first confirming that these projects are needed.
To date, the NDP has refused to listen to reasonable arguments made by Hydro officials — current and retired — and even past NDP cabinet ministers like Len Evans and Tim Sale, who have suggested the party’s push for these projects is misguided at best.
We don’t expect our provincial government to listen to every Opposition argument and criticism that gets flung their way, but we do expect our elected representatives to listen to good advice when they receive it.
A complete and open review of Hydro’s megaprojects is a prudent response to the government’s critics. Unless, of course, our government already knows it’s making a bad gamble and doesn’t want an independent review to confirm it.
