Potholes pain in the asphalt

Any business that counts on people gaining access by using its property must work pretty hard to keep things looking ship-shape and attractive.

Not to mention safe for people walking around the property at night.

Curbside appeal is one thing for someone trying to sell a residential property, but it’s crucial for anyone in the hospitality industry.

That’s why we’re so puzzled as to why Canad Inns has allowed its parking lot to degrade to such a sorry state.

Since the spring melt, there have been huge potholes right in the middle of the driving areas used by patrons of the large hotel/restaurant/nightclub complex on 18th Street.

And we’re not just talking nuisance divots here — these are potentially rim-busting, ankle-snapping monsters, as readers of the Sun saw in photos published in yesterday’s Sun.

Now, Canada Inns is an established and well-run Manitoba chain. And from what we can tell, it isn’t an outfit strapped for cash.

So why it would welcome their guests with such appalling asphalt is beyond our comprehension.

“It’s terrible,” Heidi Nugent of Neepawa told the Sun this week. “The potholes need to be fixed. It’s a popular place.”

Taxi driver Dennis McDougall said during busy nights, it can be tricky to get around.

“The only way you can get through is drive slowly over top. Otherwise, if you get someone who doesn’t know it’s there, and he nails it … It’ll do damage,” McDougall said.

“It could wreck your rim.”

It’s also bad for the overall image of Brandon as a regional hospitality centre.

Canad Inns general manager Charlene Harris told the Sun there are plans in the works to fix the problem.

“We’re on the list with a paving company to have them done,” she said. “They’re working their way down this list, and obviously with some of their other issues around town, they haven’t got to us yet, but we’re definitely on their game plan.”

We hope bringing this situation to light might put a little hurry-up in the company’s game plan.
