Race over before it began

Unless some dark horse decides to step up and make it a race before Saturday’s nomination deadline, former Canadian Alliance and Conservative Party member of Parliament Brian Pallister will take over the helm of the Manitoba Progressive Conservatives next week.

The lack of a contested leadership race has created a palpable lack of buzz and excitement for the party and as we have noted on this page before, we think that’s a shame.

Pallister doesn’t seem to be making any attempt to fill that void either. As the Winnipeg Free Press reported yesterday, the sole Tory candidate has kept a rather low profile since he announced his candidacy earlier this year — and for such a tall man, that can’t be easy.

But perhaps he’s just being cagey. Current Tory leader Hugh McFadyen said he will step down and resign his seat on July 30 and Pallister is expected to run in McFadyen’s constituency when a byelection is called.

As much as we have bemoaned the lack of a leadership contest, a win in Fort Whyte would go a long way to giving the Tories that much-needed media exposure.
