Kudos for your honesty

I would just like to send out a huge thank-you to the staff at Value Village. Recently, I dropped off a large donation. Unbeknownst to me, I had accidentally included some very irreplaceable valuable items in one of the boxes. After reporting my mistake and speaking to several very helpful staff, I was left waiting for someone to find my missing valuables. I had almost completely resigned myself to never seeing these valuables again. Then after almost a whole week had passed, my phone finally rang with the news I had been waiting for. The wonderfully honest staff at Value Village had found my diamonds. I am so impressed by the honesty and goodness of people. Brandon truly is a great place to live!

A poem worth repeating

In the aftermath of the massacre of students at Columbine in Littleton, Colo., the father of a slain student, addressed a House Judiciary Subcommittee in the U.S. on May 27, 1999. He wrote the following poem: “Your laws ignore our deepest needs, your words are empty air. You’ve stripped away our heritage, you’ve outlawed simple prayer. Now gunshots fill our classrooms and precious children die. You ask for answers everywhere, and ask the question, ‘why?’ You regulate restrictive laws, through legislative creed. And yet you fail to understand, that God is what we need!” Soon after at Columbine high school, prayer was brought back into the school.

Why so expensive?

$650,000 for 55 new windows in the Brandon Courthouse! $11,800 per window. That is crazy considering the province’s financial picture.

Under constant support

Perhaps the Idle no More protest will make taxpayers realize how our hard earned tax dollars are being squandered by our elected, high paid politicians. How can “tens of millions of (Canadian taxpayers) dollars” be squandered by one First Nations Chief with no accountability? No wonder there is poverty for the average resident on the reserve. Why has our finance minister paid out this huge amount of money with no receipts or accounting — and they ask for more. Stephen Harper and your cabinet give your heads a shake.

This is what I get for a life of hard work

Re: “We Need To Take a Stand” in the Jan. 4 Brandon Sun. I am in support of what this Sound Off represents. I gave the best years of my life to producing cheap food on my farm for people to eat only to have the federal government steal my farm with their high interest rates and cheap food policies. I am almost 80 years old and all I have in my old age is $544 plus a couple of hundred dollars of CPP to live off of. Due to health reasons I had to give up my part-time job. There are many more like me. Maybe we should get together like our Native friends and block our highways and protest with marches on Parliament Hill. But if we did that we would all be in jail by now.
