Sound Off -- Aug. 29, 2014

Embarrassing display

We were at the arabian horse shows and when leaving the parking lot we noticed the deplorable state of the Canadian flags on top of the dome building. This note is directed at the committee that has undertaken the restoration of that building — shame on you for allowing our country’s flags to still be flying in such a deplorable state when we were having visitors from all over North America attend this event. Restoration means nothing if you do not respect this symbol of our beautiful country and city!

These jobs are not the really moneymakers

It is educational to read that Finance Minister Jennifer Howard thinks that the creation of jobs in education and health care is good economics. From an economic standpoint the best jobs are in basic industry, such as farming, fishing, mining, etc. The second-best jobs are in the manufacturing and value-added industry. These jobs are the “real” money producers. Unfortunately, the NDP is doing its best to put an end to those in favour of government jobs. No wonder we are viewed with some concern by the lending institutions.

Lighting up downtown

Despite the city’s planning department not approving of the electronic sign for the downtown Global Market, city council decided to go ahead anyway. They had better watch out for all the increased traffic on Rosser. Oh yeah, I am kidding!

Christianity to blame for all wars and unrest

To the author of the Sound Off “Middle East Crisis,” do you really believe that the First World War and the Second World War were fought for religious reasons? In Russia, millions died under the reign of Lenin and Stalin. Can you blame religion for those deaths? In China, millions died when the communist party came into power. Are you seriously blaming religion? I am not saying that there never was nor are ongoing religious wars, but to say, “Just think how peaceful our world would be if not for religion” is showing ignorance.

Where is this money tree?

Where is the city getting almost $3 million from? Is that why we are facing double-digit tax increase once again next year?

Get your wallets out, folks

The feds collect tax money from across Canada. The province collects off citizens in all of Manitoba and Brandon collects off our small tax base in the city. Who is the biggest loser here? Three million dollars will greatly add to our tax bills once again! That’s right, people of Brandon! The money grabbing from city hall will not stop anytime soon!
