What is a life worth?

Last week, I witnessed a very near miss (by inches) at the intersection of the 110 bypass and Richmond Avenue. A loaded semi-gravel truck had a car turn in front of him as he was coming at about 70 to 80 km/h. If not for the alertness and brake application of that semi driver, there would have been 80,000 pounds going over that car! Now credit is due to the City of Brandon and Manitoba government for the great intersection at 17th Street East and Richmond Avenue, but does someone have to die before a similar much-needed intersection is built at Richmond and the Highway 110 bypass? Go down there between 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on a weekday and watch the fiasco.

Here comes the bus — NOT!

I ride Brandon Transit regularly and recently I had an unusual experience. The bus is supposed to be at the stop on the North Hill at 5:45. I was waiting more than an hour. He didn’t show up. I was not impressed with the service. Fortunately I found a ride. It is about time the city starts telling the bus to come on time and quit holding passengers up.

How many times do you have to be told?

People of Brandon who use the sidewalks and bike baths (even you people who walk your dogs) … remember, walk on right, walk on the right, walk on the right!

I can’t believe this is true

Regarding the Sound Off in the July 22 Brandon Sun, “Wake Up, Citizens of Canada!” If it is correct that Vancouver homeowners are being told, when building new homes what kind of doorknobs are to be used, our world is more out of whack than I ever thought possible! Also that they are to use those horrid, spiral energy efficient light bulbs as well — those bulbs give me migraines, as do all fluorescent long bulbs, too. It is not easy as there are more and more of them. It is harder and harder to find restaurants and other public places that don’t use them. They are hard to get out, and most don’t have shades on them either and they sure make a mess when they explode. Hopefully companies will quit making them before someone gets seriously hurt! If people choose to use them, it is their loss and as for the doorknobs, another stupid bill passed without much thought for others.

Always two sides to the story

To all those vehemently opposed to buffer zones, please consider the other side of the coin. I have lung issues and allergies that have become worse over the years due to the bioaccumulation of pesticides in the environment. I can no longer mow the lawn or sit in the grass as wheezing and skin rashes ensue. I, too, would like to enjoy the summer out of doors and appreciate the option to say no to more harmful chemicals. I personally use natural bug spray, take B vitamins and wear non-fluorescent clothing which helps. Please try to be empathetic to others as the number of us suffering from chemicals is growing and we only have so much say in our own environment.

I have never had a CFL bulb explode. I doubt few people have...broke one, yes and it goes "pop" because there is a certain amount of gas inside but never "explode".
