Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION

Sound Off -- Aug. 7, 2014

Reader wants more entertainment reporting

There are many concerts coming to Brandon, and it would be very much appreciated if a reporter would write about them rather than having to rely on submitted articles, plus a picture with a short caption. For example, the question and answer sessions with the artists in the Augustfest concert series are always so informative and entertaining, and the concerts are pretty good too! There are numerous stories to be told by these leading musicians with ties to Brandon, and many of us are interested in reading them. (Ed. Note: The Sun tries to cover major cultural and music events the best it can, but the newsroom’s focus is, well, the news. We do provide the most comprehensive arts and entertainment listings each Thursday in Let’s Do Something.)

Bad language is a bad idea

I am absolutely disgusted that the Brandon Sun saw fit to publish obscene threats and specifically do so verbatim. That was absolutely tragic that our newspaper has decided that “that” is the information that is fit to print without just saying that obscene threats were uttered. There is absolutely no need to go into verbatim detail and have it on the front page where everybody of all ages is reading this, especially during the summer. I think it is disgusting and the Brandon Sun should be ashamed.

Printing of bad language is uncalled for

Even though this article on the front page of the July 29 Brandon Sun by Charles Tweed stated “some language may be offensive,” there is no reason to publish such offensive material and I suggest all those involved should be dismissed from ever making another such article in any public publication. If the Brandon Sun continues such material, I for one will be cancelling my subscription. I myself am not “pure,” but to have language like in this article published is uncalled for.

Offended by your language

I was very disturbed to see an article in the Brandon Sun, let alone on the front page, with such disgusting language. Yes, it pre-warned us “EDITOR’S NOTE: The following story contains language that may be offensive to some readers.” It shouldn’t have been in there to start out with and a good writer could have used a better choice of words or description and I am sure we would have gotten the point to the story. Show some class. Shame on you Brandon Sun for allowing this. (Ed. Note: The use of verbatim quotes is currently under debate in mainstream media as it must contend with various online news sources. We only use words that are generally considered obscenities in very rare cases and always preceeded by a content warning. Does masking words such as F--- or S*** with hyphens or stars really conceal their meaning? For now, the Sun is following the new trend to publish certain quotes verbatim.)

Wheat City land not marketable

Coun. John LoRegio is dead wrong when he thinks the City of Brandon does not need a city-run golf course. He should maybe take a walk down there and he will see that no one in their right mind would want to build a home down near the river nor backing on the CPR mainline. The land there is not marketable like the golf course land in Winnipeg. Yes, Brandon needs that golf course for tourism and conventions in the city. The course could have been saved if a proper dike had been built around it. Instead, the city sat around doing nothing because they thought they had the next 300 years to do something. Also, while soccer fields are used for six weeks in the spring, they don’t bring tourism to the city. It’s time to get a higher dike built now.

First, I had no problem with the Brandon Sun using verbatim quotes. It was actually refreshing to see, rather than being edited down to a more common level.

Second, if you don't think Soccer doesn't bring tourism to Brandon, give your head a shake! When the soccer fields are open there are leagues that host teams from EVERY town in South Western Manitoba for games, as well as many teams in Brandon have players from Westman playing on them through the summer in higher end competition. Just throwing some numbers out there, but which is better: having 20 golfers a day pop in from outside the city, or having 40 families bringing players in and then go shopping and spend money in the restauraunts?
