Learn to share the road
I have absolutely had it with motorists in this city. People cry about how bicycles shouldn’t be on the sidewalks and how police should do something about it, yet when I try to bike on the road, I get honked at, sworn at, and almost hit. I’m extremely familiar with the rules of the road and I know my rights as a “motor vehicle,” but apparently it doesn’t matter to most people because they have to slow down or pass me and I’ve taken up 10 seconds of their precious time! It really is an unfortunate fact that if most people had to maintain their driver’s licence through tested knowledge, we’d have maybe 10 cars on the road in the entire city.
Flocking with the turkeys
If I were Reg Helwer, I wouldn’t be concerned about James O’Connor defecting to the NDP. James will soon realize you can’t soar with eagles when you flock with turkeys.
Welcome back, national horse show!
The Canadian National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show is back in town and the best part, according to what I read in the Sun, is that admission is free. The show features about 700 horses in 185 classes and runs today through Saturday at the Keystone Centre. This year is the second year the show has taken place in the Wheat City — let’s get out and go say hi and welcome back to the folks. This is a big event for our fair community to host.
Mixed housing doesn’t work
After reading about the atrocious act of vandalism on McDonald Avenue in Saturday’s paper, I am again reminded of why the mixed housing concept that academics and social workers all praise simply doesn’t work. McDonald Avenue is a true example of mixed housing — on one side of the street, there are beautiful and expensive homes, while on the south side, there is a mix of well-kept older houses, rental units and public housing. Guess where all the problems in the area come from? The police know.
Fix it yourself, Pipestone
I see where the RM of Pipestone is looking to get the bridges fixed down in the oilpatch area. They want the province to pay for it. The RM of Pipestone — I used to live there — is the richest municipality in the province. They have oil royalties just pouring in and they don’t want to spend any of it. Let them pay for these bridges. It is in their property. Let them put some of their money into it instead of hoarding it all.
Brew pub? Cheers!
Reading in the paper that what happens to Brandon’s decommissioned downtown fire station is now under review as developers can submit proposals on what they would do with the heritage building on Princess Avenue. There’s talk of a brew pub going there. What a fantastic idea! But wait — let’s see what two cents the usual bunch of naysayers have to say. You just know there are going to be people objecting to this smart idea for some reason. Likely just to hear themselves talk.

Nice to see all the new asphalt being laid on our City roads and streets.
If we could just get the maintenance department to fix the remaining potholes and cracks to stop further deterioration that would really be great. That just might save some us some money.
