Dakota should seek business, not confrontation
In regards to the article on Wednesday, Aug. 15 in the Brandon Sun entitled, “Province Concedes Dakota Here Before Confederation.” Everyone in their right mind should know our Dakota ancestors came into the territory known as present-day Canada to hunt and sustain their people. Being a nomadic tribe, the Dakota made these countless intrusions. Many stories have been told to bear these facts. Modern-day, supposed Dakota leaders are attempting to push the two levels of government to compromise with their defiance in closing down an illegal business known as the Dakota Chundee Smoke Shop. The majority of our Dakota people, especially in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, don’t support their antics. A legal avenue such as prosperous and profitable business ventures and partnerships, like Birdtail Sioux First Nation, will prove to be more worthwhile in the long run instead of the militant stance being undertaken.
Check the want ads
To the person who is complaining to Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Sound Off about there being no jobs, I don’t see how you can even contribute to the underground economy if all you have been doing is sponging off your parents for the last 26 years. Perhaps you should get off your butt and look for a job — they are hiring everywhere now, you just need a few skills like being able to get up and go to work on time, doing what your asked to do without complaining, etc. Not that difficult.
Look in the mirror, dude
Can’t believe a recent Sound Off that after 26 years this person couldn’t find a job. Surely this person is joking that at age 46 he can’t find a job and blames Stephen Harper for that. You should look in the mirror and then at your parents to blame.
Fire pits are the pits
I find it hard to believe that this city allows fires in firepits. Burning barrels were banned years ago. Now I would like to enjoy my backyard and fresh air without the smoke polluting my house, clothes and lungs. People are not allowed to go to hospitals, clinics, dentists wearing scented products ie. perfume, cologne, hair products. Some hospital floors in Brandon won’t allow flowers, so why would this city allow bonfires in our neighbourhoods? My place of work, where I work with many who have breathing problems, doesn’t allow scented products to be worn either. We have many people in our fair city with health problems such as lung disease, COPD, asthma, allergies and yet we are making their lives harder by allowing smoky neighbourhoods. Not fair. There has been much talk of polluting air by industry and vehicle exhaust — if we allow people to burn wood, we all breathe the problems right in our backyards all summer. Keep in mind not all families have air conditioners and some can’t afford them so they must sit in a sweat box at 80-90 degrees while someone else gets to ruin their enjoyment of a smoke-free summer.
I vote for ‘none of the above’
“We Must Bear Responsibility For Environmental Missteps” (Letter to the Editor, Aug. 15) was a very good, clear and concise letter, that recognizes that we, the people, get exactly what we elect. And while we may point a finger and lambaste government, a look in a mirror, reflects who is ultimately responsible for the woes that we allow the environment and ourselves to endure. So it is time for each and everyone to make the right choices at the ballot box and get out and vote. I believe a greater number of eligible people would get out and vote, if there was a name on the ballot that was worth supporting. Furthermore, at the bottom of every ballot, include one more entry: “none of the above.” The end count total might be surprising. And so, the complaining continues.
