Sound Off -- August 18, 2012

Great view? Get building!

The latest Sound Off about the beauty of looking out of the restaurant at the golf course proved my point. People will pay top dollar to live in such surroundings — sounds good for the taxpayers’ pocketbook! Let the building begin!

Don’t we pay enough tax already?

This week there were two instances of activities for youth at community centres in our city. Why does the city want to create a new separate youth centre at the Convergys building at the expense of the taxpayer? How much will the staff cost to keep this place running? Don’t we pay enough in taxes already? As for a multicultural centre, immigrants have that huge building down on Pacific Avenue, why on earth can they not utilize that property?

Inflation sucks ... cash

Here’s an interesting piece of trivia: Aug. 15 marked the 41st anniversary of the elimination of the gold standard (U.S. President Richard Nixon defaulted on the promise to exchange gold for paper money presented for exchange by foreign central banks). Based on U.S. CPI statistics since then, a child in 2012 would need $1 to buy the same amount of candy purchased by children for just 18 cents in 1971. It would probably be similar here in Canada. Think what it will be like in a few years with all the money printing going on today! Source of statistics: AdvisorAnalyst.com

We have no coverage, why should refugees?

I have just read an article in the Brandon Sun about health-care benefits for refugees. Ms. Aikin states that “I don’t think there is any miscalculation. This measure was designed to appeal to average taxpayers and get you onside: Pitch the notion that somehow refugees are getting something you don’t.” Ms. Aikin — we were bred, born and raised in Canada and we do not have the privilege of having dental coverage or eyeglass coverage and some of us do not have prescription drugs paid for nor any health-care coverage. Even if we wanted to get the coverage, it was not available to us through our employers. We would have had to pay for it ourselves — which was impossible at the time — we simply didn’t make enough money to accomplish this (in Canada). The majority of us would not turn our backs on someone in need, whether they be Canadians or refugees. The fact of the matter is, we have to pay for all of our health care. There is no policy in place to help us.

Here’s a use for the old police station

Could the former police station be turned into a youth detention centre?

Golf course mess council’s fault

I can’t believe that the mayor and city council sit and watch the rec centre waste away. There are two guys making hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars while they make a mess of the golf course. It is in the worst shape of its life. Don’t play it, it is a waste of money!

Doughnut press conference not so newsy

While I'm happy about Robin’s Donuts coming back to our city, I don’t think that it is worthy of a news conference. People are just going to be paid minimum wage, aren’t they? Not exactly the “smart jobs” that our mayor promised, is it? But then all the high-paying jobs at city hall are being paid out of our taxes, not private enterprise.

Sandals aren’t for work

To all the people — men, especially — who think that wearing open-toed sandals is appropriate in the workplace, shame on you! Why do you think feet are kept covered? They have an odour to them. And also, not everyone’s toes are something co-workers should be forced to look at all day. They’re pretty ugly!

National parks are for people to enjoy year-round

So some residents near Riding Mountain National Park are still upset with the government’s decision to cut some winter services at the park. And they should be! Of all the things to cut back on, that was one of the dumbest in real-life terms and in political language.
