This spending is not sustainable
When are the elected officials of this city going to start making some of the tough decisions that need to be made? It’s time they learned that there is no bottomless pit of money and spending has to be controlled. The city is not in the real estate business, nor should they be, so they will never be able to control affordable housing. Rental owners and property developers are in the business to make money. If the city wants to do something, start controlling spending and lower taxes. This will leave the ability for property owners to hold the rental rates instead of having to pass on these increases to renters every year. The Brandon School Division really needs to have a reality check as well — they are not living within their means. Start cutting your spending and get back to the education basics.
NDP taxing us to death
Regarding the Sound Off stating that the NDP would have been a better choice. Whoever wrote that — I think they need to open their eyes. It is the NDP who is taxing us here in Manitoba so highly. I really don’t even want to live here anymore. They have taxed us beyond anything reasonable. Who do you think gave us that eight per cent tax — not the Conservatives, not the Liberals — the NDP!
More dumb ideas
They have to hire someone new to handle the affordable housing issue because the director is much too busy with tourism and immigration? Are you kidding me? How about dealing with the issues at hand and get back to tourism and immigration after you take care of the people that already live here? Common sense does not exist at city hall! Hire another person and spend more money — great idea!
How many assistants does it take?
I couldn’t agree more with Coun. Stephen Montague that there is too much of the taxpayers’ money tied up in administration wages. How many assistants do we really need for a city the size of Brandon? Pretty soon, none of us are going to be able to afford to live in Brandon. I will be voting for Coun. Montague if indeed he does run for mayor in the next election.
Slow it down
Regarding construction zones and speeding. How about the accident zones on the highways where the flaggers are on both ends of the accident scene, backing up traffic? Yes, you do let your traffic through one way and then the other way. But trucks especially have a habit of gearing up all the way and by the time they are going by they practically blow the hat off of you. I have been on the department for more than 30 years and I can tell you that the truckers are getting worse and so are the people.
