Author does not know sports history
It is obvious that an article published in the Brandon Sun about the old gym being named after journalist Henry Champ contained a major gaffe. The author, most likely an athletic sports’ information person, failed to mention that the Mike McEwen rink won both a university national and world university games championship in curling. These two banners have been hanging in the old gym for years. Shame on the BU administration for allowing a release with an incomplete history to be published in the Brandon Sun. Such omissions are unacceptable. (Ed. Note: That particular piece was submitted to us for publication by Brandon University.)
Playing the blame game
I may not be the brightest, but I saw this coming for years! The NDP has hit rock bottom as Premier Greg Selinger was awarded for being the worst money managing premier in Canada. It is unfortunate our premier specifically blames last year’s $999 million deficit only on the flood. Step up, take some responsibility and do something about the problem instead of blaming others!
Bottom of the list
I was disappointed to not find any information in the Brandon Sun about a recent survey that placed our premier at the bottom of a list of Canadian premiers for fiscal responsibility. Newfoundland and Labrador was the best with 71 out of 100 and Mr. Selinger was worst at 19 out of 100. There was a news item from CBC for a short time on the internet then it was taken down. It seems the media is determined to prop up our fiscal irresponsible government. (Ed. Note: The recent Fraser Institute report was referenced in a story Saturday, Dec. 8)
Slippery slope on way to holiday train
I really do not want to complain but if expressing my thoughts might help to improve a situation, then that is the intent and purpose of my expressing them. We went to see the Holiday Train and everything about this event was most excellent. The only thing that I thought was an oversight is that the sidewalks leading to and from this event were absolutely treacherous. I thought that with a little more foresight, perhaps ice salt could have been sprinkled on the ice that completely covered these sidewalks. I saw many elderly people really struggling to walk and I saw a woman fall. We walked back from this event on the road because the sidewalks were just too dangerous to walk on. Perhaps next year you could plan ahead to accommodate the many Brandonites who come out to enjoy this event by providing them with a much safer sidewalk to walk on, to and from this wonderful event.
Adults behaving badly
I took my four-year-old son to see the Holiday Train the other night and we had a lot of fun, but I could not believe the pushing and shoving that went on by people old enough to know better! I overheard a lady tell her daughter who must have been 12 or 13 to “just push him out of the way” and then her daughter proceeded to shove my little boy back into the crowd (we were up by the tracks so he could see). I looked at this mother and said to her “push a four-year-old? Really!?” she never said anything in response. When the stage stopped and the band started, then the “adults” if you could call them that, really started to push and shove! Most people with small kids started to leave and so did we, my little boy was upset and scared because of the “mosh-pit” mentality of the crowd. Shame on Brandon adults for behaving badly!
Slip and slide sidewalks
The icy conditions at Brandon University and the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium are inexcusable. Both are establishments that are frequented by staff, students, and outside visitors on a daily basis and there is no reason the sidewalks and walking paths cannot be maintained properly. Unfortunately, someone is going to fall and seriously hurt themselves, and then maybe something will be done. It shows a complete lack of consideration for people’s safety and well being.
