A grand omission?
How can Brandon-born Bryce Salvador not be nominated for Westman’s athlete of the year? His strong play for the New Jersey Devils in last spring’s Stanley Cup playoffs had him mentioned as a Conn Smythe Trophy candidate. Not good enough for the Brandon Sun? C’mon. (Ed. note: There are residency requirements that Salvador does not meet).
Not as easy as you might think
Regarding “Idle No More,” for the person wanting the native to find employment, why don’t you try to gain employment wearing a brown face and tell us how well that goes for you. People talk, but too many people look at the colour of someone’s skin and turn their backs on them! In fact someone should do a study on this very issue, then let’s see just how prejudiced people in our city are!
Let the oil companies take charge
It seems to me the oil companies in southern Manitoba are going to save facilities in small communities where they are working (Glenboro, Reston and Virden). I guess since the provincial government lacks any vision in these matters, maybe the oil companies should be running the province.
Don’t just decorate the bathroom
Where are all the decorations that used to adorn 18th Street from the south end of town to Rosser Avenue? They have all of them downtown, but that would be like putting your Christmas tree up in the bathroom ... who is going to see it? We need something for people to see when they come into the city, not just downtown!
Look nice from a distance
I drove down to look at our Winter Light Display. It’s very nice. It’s really too bad that those who are unable to get around can’t see very much of it, especially if you can’t skate. Whoever planned it sure doesn’t give a damn about people.
Too much room for one
As the City of Brandon addresses affordable housing in the city, they need to look at how Brandon and Manitoba Housing provide shelter. For example, there is a woman living alone in a three-bedroom Manitoba Housing townhouse. The kids have been gone for over two years, so it is just her. Since there are a number of families on waiting lists who would benefit from this housing option, having a single adult in a three-bedroom place seems to be a poor allocation of resources. Unfortunately I do not think this is an isolated case.
Heads up Manitoba people
All motorists will soon have to slow down to 60 km/h on most highways and to 40 km/h on smaller roadways when passing stopped police cars, ambulances or other emergency vehicles on or beside the road or highway. The proposed legislation presently being tabled could become law and take effect by spring of 2013.
Lots of people working over the holidays
To the person who wrote that we should be thankful of their brother who works for Manitoba Hydro and had to work Christmas Day and could not spend time with his family, well boo hoo. What about the thousands of nurses, doctors, police officers, firefighters and all the other essential services, not forgetting our brave men and women in uniform, serving halfway around the world, who probably have not seen their families for six months or a year? Those are the true heroes. It will probably ease this Manitoba Hydro worker’s “pain” when he gets paid his double time and a half for his inconvenience.
