Stop the madness
There is something wrong with the system when the province controls and minimizes tuition increases at post-secondary levels but has no control over the local school division! Increases at this rate are absolutely unacceptable, but we taxpayers have no choice but to pay. Wait until next year, when all our property values are reassessed and no doubt increase in value. I guarantee both the city and the school division will still increase the mill rate (probably a “small” one or two per cent increase), but will rake in a bunch more money based on the higher values of property. This has to stop! There should be controlled increases to our taxes, just like there is on tuition. That would help stop the madness and the poor spending choices.
Plan to attend trustee meeting
An 8.5 per cent mill rate increase to school property taxes is unreasonable and irresponsible. If the property taxpayer is concerned they should be contacting each of the school trustees to express their displeasure. They should also be making a presentation at the March 4 board of trustees meeting if they are truly concerned with this increase.
Suggestion for our police
How about spending some time outside at any busy intersection and warning or ticketing any and all infractions. It seems that even red lights are only a mild suggestion, stop signs are not “visible,” cars are covered in snow or mud, everyone is on an “emergency” mission and, manners and courtesy are long gone. I for one “love” watching the yellow light train go through at nearly every intersection. Lots of tickets to be handed out. Could go a long way in covering the regular salary increases the city seems to be so eager to hand out to its own. And on the plus side, might make some people wake up to their stupidity and provide the rest of us with a safer environment in which to drive, so as to arrive alive.
A stand up teen
My 15-year-old son who attends Vincent Massey High School was riding a city bus and got up to give his seat to a very pregnant woman and before she had a chance to sit down, a man in his mid-20s, wearing a suit and carrying a brief case, plumped into the seat. So there are teens who give up their seats! And by the way, my teen, not so politely, told the man to get up and give the seat to this pregnant woman.
Time to get out of the city
Regarding the Feb. 21 Brandon Sun article, “Group Criticizes Proposed Mill Rate Increase.” All of us seniors who live on pensions are going to have to sell and move out of the city if the taxes go any higher. We can hardly keep our homes now.
If the city won’t then we will
We pay taxes just like everyone else and on our street we have no boulevards, we are lucky if our street gets plowed once a year, if we are lucky. And we had it before Christmas, so I guess that is it no matter what the rest of the year is like. So what is wrong with one or two people in the area going out and plowing the street with a little quad so at least you can drive down it?
