Sound Off -- Feb. 27, 2014

Many more options than just teachers

Why does the Brandon School Division only consider getting rid of 11 teachers to arrive at its 2.9 per cent tax increase? Why not some administrative positions or teachers’ assistants — or maybe even higher up?

Survey says … this survey is biased!

Good job by the Brandon School Division for trimming some fat. Hopefully the City of Brandon will follow suit and cut back a little. As for the survey of 486 people where 90 per cent voted for the full four per cent tax increase, that should not even have been printed. If there was to be a survey, survey 200 people who have kids, 200 people who chose not to have kids, and 200 seniors. I guarantee you that 90 per cent would turn into a 33 per cent. We all know who did the survey. I own a business. The problem is not the schooling — it is the parenting! Kids get what they want when they want it — most do not even walk to school anymore and most are so busy with iPhones, video games … “I need every Saturday off!” Their education is fine. It is their attitudes that stink.

We need to stand behind our teachers

In regards to the salaries of teachers and the cuts to come and the complainers about the division, this needs to stop! Yes, taxes may go up a bit, but it is not the worst thing for providing quality education. Teachers and the Brandon School Division are damned if they do damned if they don’t. People don’t realize the extra work that teachers put in that they don’t get paid for. Maybe the BSD should cancel all celebrations of learning, Christmas concerts in the evenings and stop allowing teachers to conduct parent/teacher interviews in the evening to accommodate parents and workplaces. That way teachers could ensure that they are only working their allotted hours and maybe not feel as though they aren’t paid for their extra hours.

Agree WestJet is great!

Just read the Sound Off (Feb. 20) about how great WestJet service to Calgary is. I have just used the service too and totally agree it is great! Having not used air travel for some time the help and service I received as I went on to Vegas was A1. Thank you WestJet.

Too young for all this booty shaking

The bare midriffs and booty-wagging displayed at this year’s Brandon Festival of the Arts in the hip hop, stage dance and jazz categories is disturbing. When combined with music lyrics that are sexually suggestive, I am concerned that our young girls are learning more about human mating rituals than dance technique. Parents and teachers, can we please let them be children for a little bit longer? What’s next — pole dancing for 10 and under?
