Sound Off! -- Feb. 27, 2017

Hope the joke doesn’t turn around on us

I notice in the Brandon Sun the jokes and cartoons about U.S. President Trump, and then I read of the mass influx of illegal refugees crossing Manitoba’s border. I hope we don’t see that the joke’s on us!

Have a little patience during spring melt

To the disrespectful person in the large pickup driving behind a disabled elderly gentleman on a mobility scooter on Feb. 21, if you could take a moment to lay off your horn, you would’ve realized the man was just trying to avoid the extremely large puddles that happen every year when this strange occurrence known as melting happens when snow and ice reach a temperature at which it can no longer keep its solid form.

School board should be paying us to tutor our own kids at home!

So the Brandon School Division claims that in order to enhance something, dollars must be thrown at it. Dollars have been thrown every year to support an academic decline. My wife and I have to tutor our kids at home nearly every night because of the lack of serious work going on in school. My kids do very little writing. The math they do in school is atrocious. The discipline is non-existent. They spend way too much time dancing, making useless posters and playing with iPads. Yet, we the public, are supposed to accept another tax increase because it will “enhance” our schools. The public sector has no problem spending other people’s money with zero accountability.

Unfortunately, if you want your child to do well in school in preparation for their future studies you have no choice but do it yourself. The tutoring by family has been happening for years!!! seems lack of seriousness in academics is quite common. If I want my child to learn dance, all types of art etc I will register them where they can get professional instruction - I do not need the school to provide this. From time to time I pick up my child from school (for appointment etc) so I go into school and all I hear is lack of control of class, kids coming and going at will, noise, no one is sitting doing classwork, no instruction being given. Its time BSD kept to the mandate of reading, writing and arithmetic!
