Showing support ... and your cards
The Feb. 12 editorial in the Brandon Sun says “we’re also generally in support of the mayor and her closest advisers.” Thank you for confirming the suspicions of many Brandonites. So much for neutrality and objectivity. Perhaps you could identify who the “advisers” are that you also support. (Ed. note: What we refer to in our unsigned editorials has no bearing whatsoever on how we cover news stories. It is two completely separate functions of this news organization: corporate opinion and news gathering.)
Feline or canine?
The deer that was killed in the outskirts of Winnipeg was definitely brought down by coyotes. They are canines and canines chase their prey. They run them down, nipping at legs and underbellys until the animal collapses. They rip out their throat and let it bleed to death. Cats on the other hand, are animals that attack from above. They jump on the raised back, dig in their claws and try to bite the back of the neck to try and sever their spinal cord and this brings the animal down in a hurry. So between the two it was definitely a coyote kill. People do not need to worry about big cats in the area.
Enjoy your retirement
I am so glad that someone finally spoke up about the retired teachers getting preference over these poor university grads when it comes to substitute teaching. These teachers chose to retire and have a nice pension coming in.
Home taxes should drop
Regarding the lead in the city pipes. Why do we have to pay anything that is on city property and since our homes are worth $10,000 less now, are they going to drop our property taxes too?
Adapt or perish
We keep hearing that aboriginals want to retain their “traditional lifestyle.” Since when was opening casinos, smuggling guns and cigarettes and living in squalor a “traditional lifestyle?” As humans, we adapt and evolve ... or we perish. My family’s traditional life was being chimney sweeps in Cambridge, England in the 1800s. I’ve never cleaned a chimney. I’ve moved on.
Gone but not forgetting
Retired teachers who leave the profession at 55 create jobs, hopefully for the truly dedicated young professionals who love kids and dedicate their lives to their care. Many retired teachers are still paying for or have just finished paying for the education of their own offspring. Their coffers are not full and their hearts have not left the classroom. Their space, however, is now yours.
An accident waiting to happen — oh, wait, it already has
On Feb. 12 I was at the Kinsmen Arena to watch a high school hockey game. Before the game started I watched in horror as a lady fell while trying to get up into the stands. The sound of her head hitting the floor was frightening. She had to be taken to the hospital. These stands are disgusting and unsafe. They would not be allowed under construction standards in Manitoba. Why are they allowed in the Kinsmen and Optimist arenas? A lot of money is going into the Dome Building — which by the way should have been torn down and replaced with a much cheaper metal building — but they don’t seem to care about public safety. It is only a matter of time before there are lawsuits over someone getting seriously hurt on these stands.
Boulevards a nuisance
In regards to the person in the Brandon Sun article who was clearing snow on 13th Street, I say bravo and thank you! Perhaps it’s an indication of how the city is not keeping up with snow clearing. Furthermore, if the province and city would take a look at how roads are built in the U.S., they would notice that there are no boulevards and medians to be in the way in the first place when clearing snow. They are a nuisance, pretty for flowers in the summer, but overall a nuisance.
