Do it right the first time

In regards to this gas line overhaul at the Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology at ACC. This is a $46 million trade centre — what went wrong here? Where were the inspectors and the fire commissioners office at the time when these were being installed and planned? Some planning! What a waste of taxpayer dollars. I wonder if these people are doing nothing but twiddling their thumbs.

Teach your kids some manners

This is to the City of Brandon bus drivers, the students who take home ec and industrial arts at other schools and to their parents. I have come to dread taking the bus on the days those students take them to transfer schools because you can not get a seat on the bus for all these lazy kids who have not been taught that it is good manners to give up their seats to someone who is obviously carrying a heavy load or having trouble standing. It is really bad manners. And if someone ever slips, it will be the City of Brandon who gets sued.

Jails too crowded as it is

This is in regards to having bullies charged and suspended. Oh come on, really? Where are we going with this in the long term. Think about the implications. Soon we will go back to having people in jail for minor mishaps.

And more on that topic

So off these kids go to high school, not having to work for anything. They arrive at high school to find out they do not have to hand-in assignments on time, and they can get away with doing nothing and still get by. Their classes are accommodated and modified so they can get credits. The result? An artificially high school graduation rate celebrated by BSD when in reality it is a diploma that is not even worth the paper it is printed on. And we wonder why the young people today feel a sense of entitlement? Maybe the old days weren’t all that bad after all.

Signs of things to come?

The sign in front of the church at 15th Street and Princess Avenue read: “Christmas is coming. So is Jesus. Are you ready?” There is a different sign up now. In the heat of the summer, their sign read: “This is hot but we know of a much hotter place.” I think that these signs and the signs in front of some of these other churches are very good for the soul. These are important thoughts for us to ponder and reflect on as we drive by and I, for one, always ask my children in my vehicle to tell me what they say as we drive by. Keep up the very good work, churches! Thank you for the consistently very good, thought-provoking messages. I sure appreciate them.

Retired teachers are appreciated

I work in the Brandon School Division. The person who criticized retired teachers monopolizing on the subbing opportunities at the expense of university graduates does not have all the facts. There is a critical shortage of substitute teachers in our school division. This has been previously reported in the Brandon Sun. Many retired teachers are substitutes and provide us with a reliable, competent service. There are plenty of opportunities for both graduates and retired teachers who are willing to be available to go to work, often on short notice. On any given day, there are not enough available subs and classrooms must make internal provisions to carry on learning in the classroom. Last week a school was not able to offer library and phys. ed classes for a day because no subs were available. We have a very competent booking clerk. There is certainly lots of work for everyone.

Someday it will be too loud for you too

To the person who says to stay home if you don’t like jeans or music of 2013 — I agree for the most part. Jeans are part of your wardrobe, but they don’t define how you do your job. My complaint is that you seem to have missed the point about music at the hockey games. It’s not the music itself that people are complaining about it is the unnecessary high volume of it. You may think it is fine and for the most part I agree, but wait a few years after this noise pounding away at your eardrums puts a premature end to your sense of hearing, then get back to me and tell me the music at the 2013 Wheat Kings games is just fine.
