What are you waiting for?
Regarding the story in the Feb. 26 paper about the snow removal budget being on target. Are you kidding me? My street has not been plowed once by the city this year, but a friend of a friend of a friend did it for us, otherwise we would have bigger ruts than we do now. Is the city going to pay for a chiropractor for me because every time I am trying to get home I am getting jarred by the ruts in the street? What are we paying taxes for? Are you waiting for another big dump of snow to use up your 78 per cent left? Oh, and don’t forget to sand as well so I won’t slide into the adjacent street and into oncoming traffic.
That time of year again
After last year’s controversy, it looks like the “curse” placed by the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair on the Brandon Wheat Kings has worked to perfection. Perhaps for the benefit of “Chewy” and the rest of the coaching staff they can ease up now!
Bad bin business
Remember when the city discussed the wonderful new garbage bins? When asked what to do if we couldn’t manage pulling these bins out through the snow and mud and we were told, “just leave them in the back lane.” Next idea, “oh, just turn them sideways and the drivers won’t empty them.” We tried that and they emptied them anyway. Whose fault is that one? Many of us don’t have “hiding places” for these bins, so our “pretty yards” are now ugly. It’s been a fun winter having to shovel deep snow to the lane only to find they’ve plowed our gates shut! We need “smarter” people in charge!
This is very, very scary
It is time to do the math. Brandon School Division wants an 8.5 per cent mill rate increase. Manitoba Hydro wants a 3.9 per cent increase. Did any of us get a 12.4 per cent raise this year? Add that to new taxes on gasoline, haircuts, mortgage insurance, life insurance, household insurance, etc., and it is very, very scary. Speaking of that, take a close look at what Manitoba Hydro wants in the 3.9 per cent each year for the next 18 years. Take a close look at this. It would be a 3.9 per cent increase this year and next year would be another 3.9 per cent on top of what the 3.9 increased your bill to this year, and so on. Seems to me this could be bordering on 70 to 100 per cent increase on our Hydro bills for this period of time.
Don’t you want your children to have the best education possible
Regarding the school tax hike. Considering the excellent education Canadians enjoy, you would think that paying for that education would not be a problem. I’m happy to pay a little more to ensure that our city’s children continue to get a top-notch education. If you don’t want to pay for your child’s future, stop having children.
Do the math!
This is pertaining to the Brandon School Board’s 8.5 per cent mill rate increase. When our federal government is cutting back why is it that Mark Sefton and his bureaucrats don’t do the same? If people want all these programs, they should pay for it themselves and not run to the taxpayers’ empty pockets. I am a pensioner and I cannot afford all these increases. We seniors got a big increase — whoop de doo, a big $1.09 — not 8.5 per cent.
