To the Christmas grinch
This has been a difficult Christmas for our family and it has been compounded by someone stealing most of the food out of our garage freezer. I realize that you probably needed it, but it saddens me that there was no respect for our situation. I am not a wealthy person and the Christmas treats and groceries you took will not be replaced. It will also take quite a few paydays to replenish our staples. I contribute to charities and do what I can, but this has shaken my faith in the goodness of mankind.
An example for us all
With all the bad and sad news in the media today it is great to hear of the generosity of Kirby and Marie Fontaine of the Sagkeeng First Nation. This young couple won the lottery in 2009. What is wonderful to hear is what this exemplary pair have done quietly and without fanfare over the years. They have supported many projects and charities at home and in the province. They have shown us how to truly be neighbours. They seek no recognition and reward other than the satisfaction of helping others. However, if anyone is deserving of recognition by the government, provincial or federal, it is them. The governor general’s award seems inappropriate.
A much better read
Regarding James O’Connor’s column in the Dec. 29 Brandon Sun, “Making Brandon A Better Place.” Thank you, James O’Connor, for doing away with those “30 most powerful” and “20 honourable mentions” lists that you generate each year and instead recognized the people and organizations in our community that are deserving of a place in your column. It was a joy for me to read your selections and I must say that I agree wholeheartedly with them.
Ban cycling in the winter
Almost ran over a cyclist the other day who crossed Richmond Avenue without checking for traffic dressed in a parka and balaclava. A couple weeks ago a cyclist was killed in Winnipeg at 2 a.m. cycling on their icy, snow-covered streets. Cycling, folks, is a summer activity ... and it should be banned from Oct. 1 until March 1 every year as it’s asinine for people on bicycles to be attempting to manoeuvre our icy, winter streets. They are a threat to all motorists and it’s a wonder more are not maimed or killed during our winter months.
This makes me happy
To the employer who states that half of his workforce has brown faces and he loves it, this makes me happy especially if these employees are aboriginal! For that person who talks about Maple Leaf and their hires of all colours, most people are not aware of the extreme poverty these people face in their own countries! No wonder immigrants want to come live here and work at Maple Leaf, going from making $30 to $50 a week to how much here? They think that they have struck gold!
