I thought the “question of accountability” in Our View was very enlightening. I felt is was very encouraging that Chief Ken Chalmers gave us an inside view of the origin of the treaties. It is encouraging to hear a different view as after awhile the negativity only serves to turn the public off.
Standing in line for education
I would like to know, how many working-class single parents were able to sacrifice work and organize child care to stand in line at École Harrison at 5 a.m.? École Harrison, a public school that is virtually impossible to get your child into unless you are privileged enough to come from a family situation where such things as work and child care don’t get in the way of such things as standing in line for four hours to register your child in a school that claims not to be elitist at all. Has the school board forgotten that this is a public school? I was disgusted and disappointed by what I saw when I watched parents leave their spot in line to go to work knowing full well that their child will not have the same opportunity as someone that did not have these commitments. So I guess the dual-track French immersion is good enough for the low- to middle-income earners and single-track is reserved for the upper-income earners.
We all need to work together
I do not understand how in this day and age Canadians do not or choose not to understand how this country came to be. It wasn’t founded. There were already people living here, treaties and promises were made for compensation — those last forever as long as you continue to utilize the lands and resources — plain and simple. It was the government of the day that created laws to rule over a certain race — nowhere else do you see Irish Acts, Ukrainian Acts, German Acts. So what gave them the right to create the Indian Act? We are in an era of change. Work with the people instead of condemning and perpetuating racist thoughts and comments.
Need more green space
Brandon is definitely going through a housing development spurt right now, particularly in the south end of the city. Granted the more houses they can shove in the alloted space, the more money the developer and the city get. I think the long-term goals for these new developed areas should include way more green space so the people in this high-density area might be able to take their children to a park with trees and grass — not just wall-to-wall streets and houses to gaze at.
I’ll be watching you
To the individuals who are walking their dogs in my back lane on 13th Street, between Princess and Rosser avenues, please stop allowing your pets to defecate by my garbage bin and beside my driveway. If you were a responsible pet owner, you would have brought a bag and just scooped this up and put it in the garbage bin yourself. Do I need to get cameras, put these up and then shame you into behaving more appropriately as a pet owner? I am really tired of looking at your dog feces every time I get in my vehicle to leave in the morning. I want this behaviour to stop now or else I am going to do something about it. Grow up already, please.
Which way you going?
What is so difficult about using a signal light? For all the effort it takes to turn it on and off, there shouldn’t be anyone not signalling. Do people not realize how dangerous it is to not signal or to drive around with your signal on? Get it together, people. It’s no wonder there are so many accidents.
Illegal parking
Why do police not ticket the cars that park in the fire lane on the west side of Westman Communications Place during Wheat King games? Five to 10 cars park there every game.
